The Solomon Islands are among the most spectacular, remote, and unspoiled archipelagos in the South Pacific. For generations, biologists have suspected that the key to understanding speciation, or the process by which new species arise, could be found in the Solomon Islands. The great biologist Ernst Mayr visited the Solomon Islands in 1929 after his mentor advised him, “There is no other place in the world more favorable for the study of speciation… than the Solomon Islands.” In 2013, we traveled to the Solomon Islands with Dr. Al Uy, an evolutionary biologist from the University of Miami, to produce a 1-hour documentary about his cutting-edge research on speciation. The resulting film, Islands of Creation, is currently in post-production and will be released in late 2014 or early 2015. Here is a 2-minute teaser for the film.
